In the recently concluded Test series, New Zealand sealed a 2-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka. After facing a two-wicket loss in the first Test match, Sri Lanka were knocked out of the race for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023 final. However, their loss paved way for team India to secure their spot in the WTC final which will begin on June 7 at The Oval. The action moves to a three-match ODI series which will be played between March 25 and 31 in Auckland, Christchurch, and Hamilton.
New Zealand Cricket have named Tom Latham as captain for the ODIs as Kane Williamson will be taking part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, which will begin on March 31. Alongside Williamson, Tim Southee, Devon Conway, and Mitchell Santner have been released after the Test series to participate in the IPL. Meanwhile, Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, and Glenn Phillips will also leave the squad after the first ODI to travel to India. Tom Blundell and Will Young have been recalled in the squad while uncapped players Chad Bowes and Ben Lister have received maiden call ups.
The ODI series against New Zealand is extremely important for Sri Lanka, as it carries ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League points with it. The Dasun Shanaka-led side who are in 10th place in the Super League table with 77 points, will look to gain maximum points to secure direct qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Sri Lanka fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera was ruled out of the series as he is still undergoing rehabilitation following his left ankle surgery. Pramod Madushan has come in as a replacement for Chameera.
