The prominent Australian batter, Steve Smith is reportedly in talks with County side Sussex over a potential short-term contract ahead of the much-awaited Ashes series, which is set to commence from June 16, 2023.

The former Australia skipper decided not to take part in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League and thus, has a window of over two months to prepare for The Ashes in England.

As per a report by The Sydney Morning Herald, Sussex are in advance talks with the cricketer and both parties are interested to strike a deal soon. However, Smith’s entourage is also reported to be in contact with other county sides in order to explore other opportunities.

As things stand, most of the county sides have already secured their overseas signings and thus, only a few teams have a selected number of slots left. Smith is expected to play at least three to four matches, just to get adjusted to the English conditions. He showcased some stellar batting performances in the last Test series he played in England and would expect to repeat the same in the coming summer.

In the meantime, the 33-year-old is expected to feature in his first BBL game after three years. However, Smith is not going to play a lot of matches as the Australian side will soon leave for India for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

‘It’s going to be exciting’ - Smith ahead of India and England tour

Steve Smith recently stated that he is very excited about what’s going to come in the next six months. The team will travel abroad for a four-match Test series against India and after a break, they will play five Test matches against their biggest rival, England.

“It should be a good six months of cricket with India and then the Ashes. As an Australian cricketer, they’re the two biggest hurdles. It’s going to be exciting,” Smith said.
