Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six wickets in their previous encounter in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing a target of 200 runs, MI chased down the target in 16.3 overs, courtesy of a terrific knock by Suryakumar Yadav (83 runs off 35). Nehal Wadhera also provided a worthwhile contribution, smashing an unbeaten knock of 52 runs off 34 balls.
Despite MI's superb batting display, skipper Rohit Sharma's poor run of form continued as he was dismissed for seven runs off eight balls against RCB. It's worth noting that the Team India skipper has scored only 191 runs from 11 innings which includes a solitary half-century.
Former West Indies captain Daren Ganga has now come up with a solution for Rohit Sharma, who is currently going through a lean patch. He mentioned the example of Virat Kohli and spoke on how the former India skipper regained his form after going through a poor run of form. He said that Rohit is also going through a comparable situation to Kohli as he is playing a lot of cricket at the moment.
“There is no doubt that he is a quality player. We have seen stories in the past of great players who have gone through periods of a slump, more recently Virat Kohli was in a lull with his batting and he had to go through a lean period before he regained that form and that desire to score runs."
"Rohit is going through a similar situation where he is playing a lot of cricket, sometimes as a player you can get jaded, (with) the responsibilities as captain, as a player," Ganga was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Rohit should take a break before the WTC final: Ganga
Ganga feels that Rohit should take a break before the World Test Championship final (WTC) against Australia which is scheduled to be played at The Oval, London from June 7. The 44-year-old opined that a break will also help him to get back to form at the time of the 2023 Cricket World Cup which is scheduled to be held in India in October-November.
"You have heard Sunil Gavaskar recommend that he take a break, and freshen his mind before the World Test Championship - that might be a good option for him. I felt that in a couple of matches that he played as an impact player with Suryakumar Yadav leading the side that can also be a common ground for him to get a little more time for himself so that he can be fresh when it comes to his batting in the WTC final", he added.
