'The batting becomes slightly weak after that' – Ajinkya Rahane wants one change in India's playing XI for NZ vs IND 5th T20I
Ajinkya Rahane believes Kuldeep Yadav should feature in India's playing XI for the fifth T20I against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton, but acknowledges the selection challenge it creates.

At Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday, November 1, India will take on New Zealand in the fifth T20I of their series, with squad composition emerging as a key talking point before the match. The debate centres on India's spin options and how the team can balance specialist bowling with batting depth across the lower order.
Ajinkya Rahane has offered his perspective on the selection puzzle while previewing the contest. Both Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are quality spinners, yet fielding both creates practical constraints for captain Shreyas Iyer and the management when deciding who sits out of the playing XI, especially because the conditions have not been in favour of spinners so far.
"We want to see two spinners because both are quality spinners. However, I feel the management is focusing on the conditions while picking the playing XI, and you don't get that much batting depth either. If you play an extra bowler, you don't have that batting option," Rahane said while previewing the game on SonyLIV when he was asked whether India should bring Kuldeep on Chakaravarthy into the mix.
Why does India's playing XI selection remain contested?
The core of Rahane's concern is how introducing another specialist bowler diminishes India's lower-order batting resources. All-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy and Naman Dhir have provided crucial balance to the XI, with Iyer using the latter for brief bowling spells whenever the situation demands. This dual contribution ensures the team maintains batting depth throughout the order.
"Nitish Kumar Reddy gives you batting and bowling options. Shreyas Iyer has used Naman Dhir for one or two overs whenever he gets a chance. So you get depth in batting. I personally want to see Kuldeep Yadav come into the playing XI, but the problem is who you would make sit out because the batting becomes slightly weak after that," Rahane said.

The selection dilemma reflects a broader tension in T20 cricket between maximising specialist bowling strength and preserving a capable batting lineup. India's management must carefully weigh the quality of their spin attack against the security of having reliable batters available throughout the innings for the fifth T20I at Seddon Park.
