Rahul Dravid was offered the role of head coach of the Indian team after the T20 World Cup 2021. The former cricketer was then working with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and refused to join the team as it would mean a lot of time on the road. However, then president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah convinced the legendary cricketer as Dravid signed the contract for two years.
The main objective was to do well in the T20 World Cup 2022 and in the ODI World Cup 2023. Meanwhile, even though India failed to put up a show in the shortest format, the Men in Blue were phenomenal in the ODI World Cup but failed to lift the trophy, as they lost to Australia on the night of the finals. After the final, Dravid was asked if he would continue with the national team, for which, the 50-year-old didn’t give a kosher answer.
In the meantime, there are reports that BCCI has offered a contract extension to Dravid until T20 World Cup 2024. However, cricketer-turned-commentator, Aakash Chopra believes that he might turn down the offer in order to spend more time with his family.
“BCCI is keen on extending Rahul Dravid's contract. All hints and news point toward... yes, he has been given an extension. But there's a chance he might not take it, there is a possibility because Team India's coaching job takes a huge toll. For your family, for your personal life, it's a little harmful, I am telling you very honestly. You are on the road so much that it doesn't work out very well. But again, priorities,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Team that played the T20 WC in 2022, almost a similar team might play in 2024: Chopra
Meanwhile, Chopra also stated that the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli might feature in the upcoming T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA and if they indeed play, the team might be almost similar to that of 2022.
“I have a feeling that they (BCCI) have also told Rohit Sharma that we are not going to tell you anything, you carry on and lead us in the T20 World Cup 2024. I am almost sure that the same thing has been told to Virat Kohli. If that is the case, I am thinking, the team that played the T20 World Cup in 2022, almost a similar team might play in 2024," Chopra added.
