With the Border Gavaskar Trophy finally underway, many fans were looking forward to the series' debutants. Suryakumar Yadav and KS Bharat made their Test debuts for India, while 22-year-old Todd Murphy earned his first Test cap for Australia from Nathan Lyon.
Becoming the 465th male player to put on the Baggy Green cap, Todd’s father, Jamie Murphy, recently came forward and compared the 22-year-old’s mentality to that of legendary Australian bowler Shane Warne. Jamie played with late Shane Warne back in the early nineties, and he opined that Todd has more in common with Warne than one might think.
"There's a lot of traits of Warnie in Todd, That never-say-die attitude, that 'we can win from anywhere' attitude. He (Todd) is 'out there' a little bit at times as well," Jamie Murphy told Cricket Australia.
Todd Murphy’s family came a long way to see him receive his debut Test cap
As the 22-year-old Murphy finally received his debut game for the Aussies, the Murphys traveled a long way to Nagpur to see Todd represent the national side in the Baggy Greens. Murphy’s father, Jamie, left Moama at 2 AM and made the three-hour drive to the Melbourne airport, from where he flew out to Nagpur via Sydney and Bangalore.
Jamie, along with Todd’s brother Joel, his uncle Troy, his cousin Riley, and his partner Bec, were all present at the VCA stadium to see Todd make his debut and represent the Australian team in the first Test against India.
Meanwhile, the team India dominated the first day of the Test match in Nagpur. The Aussies were able to put up only 177 on the scoreboard after Marnus Labuschagne scored 49 off 123 balls and Alex Carey provided the Aussies with some much-needed runs.
The knocks of Steve Smith and Peter Handscomb were also essential for the team putting up a decent score. Team India ended the day after losing a wicket to none other than Todd Murphy, who caught and bowled KL Rahul for 20 runs.
