The Indian cricket team has added another feather to its illustrious cap with a thumping triumph at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The team has already had their moment of glory, when they won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2007 on the South African soil. Among other ICC events, the Men in Blue also have a couple of trophies for the ODI World Cup — 1983 and 2011, in addition to another 50-over Champions Trophy victory in 2013.
The first time Indian team won the World Cup, they went to England as underdogs, led by Kapil Dev. Upon their return, the then Honourable Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had hosted a warm welcome for the winning team. It took them 24 years before grabbing another ICC trophy, with the 2007 win against arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. The entire nation had burst into jubilation, as the win had come shortly after the shambolic exit from the ODI World Cup in the West Indies, earlier that year.
The 2011 victory was even more special for the team as well as for the fans, as it had been clinched on the home soil. On the night of the finals, India hosted Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, and as soon as captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit that iconic six into the crowd, the atmosphere across the country was nothing short of a festival, as the streets were filled with enthusiast fans, who celebrated the win as if they themselves had a part to play in the tournament.
As Rohit Sharma and Co.'s have announced their victory convoy, from Nariman Point to Wankhede Stadium, the fans are excited to join the celebratory display of the long-awaited trophy. Undoubtedly, the Mumbaikars will jam pack the Marine Drive, as another Sea of Blue is expected alongside the Arabian Sea on July 4.
Enough said, let us have a quick video recap of the actual scenes that took centre-stage at each World Cup won by the Indian team.
