Young India cricketer Tilak Varma is focusing on developing into an all-rounder to get into the India squad. The 21-year-old is stated to be bowling a lot in the practice sessions to develop his game and is eyeing the upcoming domestic season to do well and push for a spot in the Indian Test side. Notably, he is part of the India A squad in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024 but didn’t feature in the first round of the competition.
However, with many cricketers left to join the national team for the Bangladesh series, Tilak is expected to feature in the upcoming game against India D. Ahead of that, the Hyderabad-born cricketer stated that he is focusing on being a complete all-rounder. He is also eyeing to do well in the longest format as he believes that his game against the white ball will also improve if he learns to tackle the red ball.

“Since this Indian Premier League (IPL) season, and from last year in general, I have been working on my bowling a lot. Especially with the red ball, I am focusing a lot on my game as an all-rounder. If I perform well in the longest format, it's very easy to go and deliver with the white ball, so that's why I'm bowling a lot nowadays,” Tilak told Sportstar.
If you play for the team and win the matches, there is always a place open in the Indian team: Varma
Tilak is hoping to do well in the upcoming matches of the Duleep Trophy to fight for a place in the Indian team. Speaking about which, the youngster noted that the door for the Indian team is always open as long as a cricketer does well in domestic cricket and wins games for their respective teams.
“Whatever the situation needs, we just need to bat according to that, and we always want to win the match for our team. If you play for the team and win the matches, there is always a place open in the [Indian] team. So, that's where I focus, and whatever match I play, I just want to win. So, if I do well here, I think automatically I will reach the ultimate goal,” Tilak added.
