Former India captain Anil Kumble stated that the off time has benefited KL Rahul following the latter’s sensational knock against Australia in the ODI World Cup 2023. India made a strong start in the tournament, winning the match by six wickets.
Rahul came in to bat at No. 4 alongside Virat Kohli (85) when India were reeling at 2/3. The duo stabilized the run-chase with a 167-run partnership, marking the highest fourth-wicket stand in the history of ODI cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter amassed an unbeaten 97 off 115 deliveries, including eight boundaries and two maximums.
“Yes, I think you know, Certainly the time off has helped him. And it's what has been impressive has been his game awareness and also the toughness to sort of go through those phases and be consistent. We all knew his skill, his talent and his ability both against pace and spin, but to control all of that to ensure that you know he does what is needed of him for the team has been outstanding," Kumble told ESPNcricinfo.
The 52-year-old went on to say the innings in Chennai was the best he had seen of the wicketkeeper-batter in the last few months. "Yes. In the last couple of months? Yes, brilliant batting from KL."

Rahul sustained a serious hamstring injury during Lucknow Super Giants' clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in May 2023. His right thigh needed surgery as a result, which kept him out of the game for a while afterward.
Despite this setback, he made a remarkable return to the game in the Asia Cup 2023, leading India to a huge total of 356 runs with a brilliant 111* against Pakistan in the Super Four stage. His comeback extended beyond the continental championship, as he scored 136 runs in three ODI matches against Australia before the World Cup.
