Tom Abell has extended his contract with Somerset till the 2028 season. The 32-year-old all-rounder, who made his first-class debut for Somerset in 2014, has played all his cricket for the club after rising through the ranks through their academy.

He has played 278 matches for the club across all formats, scoring more than 11,700 runs with 24 centuries, while also taking 62 wickets. He also helped Somerset win the T20 Blast in 2023 and 2025.

"The club is a huge part of me and my family's lives. Getting to represent Somerset is something I'm very proud of. It's been great to be a Somerset player over the last few years, and I want to take that on and continue to bring success to the club," Abell told the club website.

"I'm a Somerset boy and a Taunton boy through and through and I've only ever wanted to play for Somerset. I want to be a one-club man so it's obviously a great feeling to sign this extension," he added.

Abell was appointed club captain in 2017, becoming the first Somerset academy player to lead the club. He led the team to a successful One Day Cup Triumph at Lord’s in 2019. He resigned from captaincy in 2023.

"Tom is a player who epitomises everything that it means to play for Somerset County Cricket Club. He has a genuine passion for this club and everything that it represents. His work ethic is second to none and his dedication to improving every day is something to be admired," Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry said.

"Over the years Tom has developed into an outstanding multi-format cricketer, arguably one of the best in the country, and he has been integral to our success over the last few years,” he added.

He has become a regular in the franchise circuit after developing his T20 game. He was part of the Sunrisers Eastern Cape side that won the 2024 SA20, scoring 286 runs in nine games at a strike rate of 152.94. He is set to play for Southern Brave in the 2026 Hundred.
