Mumbai’s prolific batter Sarfaraz Khan missed out on the playing XI for his city side against Services in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The right-hander had been in brilliant form and played a vital part in Mumbai’s success in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final. The 25-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Ranchi after suffering pain due to a kidney stone and could not make it to the ground.

Mumbai also missed Shivam Dube in the line-up as he was ruled out recently from the tournament after an injury he picked up while bowling. Star batter Shreyas Iyer is not available as he is with the Indian side for the New Zealand tour and the Ajinkya Rahane-led side had to depend on promising youngsters like Armaan Jaffer and Sairaj Patel to make a difference.

The one-night stay in the hospital was a precautionary exercise: Mumbai team official

Sarfaraz’s father confirmed the medical issue is under control and Sarfaraz is recovering well. The right-hander did not find a place in the Indian side for Bangladesh tour despite ending up as the highest run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy last year, however, he is in line to picked for the Bangladesh A tour.

"It is a minor but painful ailment of kidney stone, something he has been suffering from for quite some time. It gave him a lot of pain because of which he had to be taken to the hospital. He is fine now," Sarfaraz's father Naushad Khan was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

"Sarfaraz is expected to be fit. The one-night stay in the hospital was a precautionary exercise and we are confident about his participation in Thursday's game," a Mumbai team official was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Mumbai lost to Services by eight wickets in their second game and they will need to ensure they win against Maharashtra in their next encounter to enhance their qualification chances after winning one and losing one game so far.
