Former India Test batter Wasim Jaffer is highly impressed with Washington Sundar’s all-round abilities and has mentioned that the latter can be a very good prospect for the national team going forward. Sundar was the star performer for India with both the bat and ball in the first T20I against New Zealand at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday, January 27.

The spin bowling all-rounder finished with impressive figures of 2/22 from his four overs at an economy of 5.5 and also stood out with the bat in the second innings scoring a 28-ball 50. However, his efforts went in vain as the hosts lost the contest by 21 runs.

India would be happy that Washington Sundar got runs: Wasim Jaffer

“India would be happy that Washington Sundar got runs. He looks like a really good prospect for the future, especially in white-ball formats. India would have been pleased to see Washington Sundar do well,” said Wasim Jaffer while speaking on ESPNcricinfo.

Sundar dismissed the likes of a well-set Finn Allen and Mark Chapman inside the powerplay overs. While Allen scored 23-ball 35, Chapman walked back without troubling the scorers.

At the same time, Wasim Jaffer has also expected the Indian team to bounce back strongly after this demoralizing defeat.

“Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya were the last hopes. Two dismissals within two overs completely shut the shop for India. India would be coming back strongly. It’s kind of a one-off game and you expect this Indian team to bounce back strongly in the next game”, he added.

The two teams will now lock horns in the second T20I at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, January 29. The Men in Blue would be hoping to learn from the mistakes made in their disappointing batting performances and would now be looking to make a statement this time around with the series on the line.
