As the ODI series between India and Australia got underway, the hosts asserted their dominance in the very first game after a fabulous performance by the Indian middle-order. However, Steve Smith’s Australia did not go down easily, as they managed to win the second ODI in sensational fashion.
India have been struggling to put up runs on the scoreboard as Australia terrorized the hosts through the dangerous spells of Mitchell Starc, who took a fifer in the second match. India's top-order has been unable to impress across the two ODIs, and former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer came forward to suggest a change in the squad.
Jaffer opined that Suryakumar Yadav, who was dismissed for a golden duck in both ODIs against Australia, could be rested for the third ODI, and felt that it would not be such a bad idea to give Sanju Samson a chance.
We have to see if the management sticks with him in the third ODI: Jaffer
Wasim Jaffer talked about Samson’s possible inclusion in the team for the third ODI following Suryakumar Yadav’s repeated poor showings.
"We might sympathize with Suryakumar Yadav as the first ball that he faced was of 145 clicks. No doubt that it's challenging when a left-arm seamer tries to bring the ball back in. Again, he should have anticipated that when Mitchell Starc bowls, he will attack the stumps and might swing the ball," Jaffer said on ESPNCricinfo's Timeout.
"We have to see if the management sticks with him in the third ODI; otherwise, it's not a bad option to give Sanju Samson a chance because he has played well when given the opportunity and he is a good player," he added.
Samson has played 11 ODIs for India, where he has managed to score 330 runs and has an average of 66. If Suryakumar is dropped from the squad in the third match, Samson could be a potential replacement.
