Winners of the 2021-22 season of the Women's Big Bash League, Perth Scorchers, have appointed former England international Rebecca Grundy as their head coach in a two-year contract.
Grundy was serving as their assistant coach for the past three editions and has now signed up to don the head coach hat. She will replace Shelley Nitschke, who at the moment is heading the coaching duties of the Australian women's cricket team.
After her playing career, she joined the Western Australia set-up in the capacity of their development coach before she was announced as their head coach before the start of the 2020/21 Women's National Cricket League season.
She will continue to take care of her role at Western Australia alongside her WBBL commitments. Grundy expressed her excitement pertaining to taking up the new responsibility and mentioned that she is really looking forward to the same.
"I am absolutely delighted to be taking on the role as head coach of the Perth Scorchers WBBL program and I am very keen to get started," Grundy said. "To be involved in such a successful franchise and continue my growth as a coach and as a person is a really exciting opportunity for me. We've got a hungry and talented list, and we're driven to achieve long-term success for the club."
"Shelley (Nitschke) has been a wonderful mentor to me, and I have learnt so much from her. I can't wait to build on all her hard work and have more success with this amazing club."
Grundy made her debut for England in March 2014 against the West Indies. She went on to play seven ODIs and 12 T20Is for them.
Scorchers were able to clinch the WBBL title back in 2021-22 defeating Adelaide Strikers in the summit clash by 12 runs and Nitschke was the coach back then. However, they failed to replicate a similar performance in the latest season gone by as they finished fifth on the points table with six wins and seven losses.
