'We believe we can challenge any team now' - Spin-bowling coach Mushtaq Ahmed backs Bangladesh's WTC hopes

Bangladesh sit fourth in the World Test Championship points table with a win percentage of 55.56 per cent, positioned behind Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. The team has six Tests remaining in the current cycle and needs 47 more points to strengthen their qualification chances for the final.

Mushtaq Ahmed, Bangladesh's spin-bowling coach, has expressed confidence in the team's ability to compete at the highest level. Speaking on the team's recent performances and future prospects, Ahmed outlined the mindset required to succeed in international cricket.

"Inshallah, why not? We are in a great position now. If we play good cricket and keep believing, we have the right to go all the way," Mushtaq was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Mindset shift key to international success

Bangladesh recently won a historic Test in Darwin against Australia but lost the second Test in Mackay. Despite the mixed results, the coaching staff remains optimistic about the team's trajectory in the championship.

Mushtaq emphasised the importance of mental strength and belief when competing against top-ranked sides. He highlighted the shift in mindset that the coaching group has worked to instil within the squad.

"The only way you can win matches at the international level is when you are not worried about losing. This is the mindset we, as coaches, have to change. Credit goes to all the players, selectors, and stakeholders because they are on the same page and believe we can challenge any team now," Mushtaq said.

Bangladesh's path to strengthening their WTC qualification chances involves their upcoming home Tests. Winning all four remaining home Tests against West Indies and England would take Bangladesh's win percentage to 61.11 per cent, significantly improving their standing in the championship race. One additional victory from the two remaining away Tests would provide an excellent opportunity to secure qualification for the World Test Championship final.

Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and India are the four teams that have played WTC finals so far. The Proteas are the defending champions, having beaten the Aussies in the finals of the last edition in June 2025.
