South Africa have had a dream run in the tournament so far. After being stunned by Sri Lanka in the tournament’s curtain-raiser, they staged a remarkable comeback by defeating New Zealand in their second fixture by 65 runs.

Their campaign once again faced a halt as they received a hammering against the defending champions Australia by six wickets. However, in their last game against Bangladesh, a must-win encounter, they completed a dominating win by ten wickets and sealed a place in the semi-final.

In the semi-final against mighty England, the Proteas held their nerve and kept a strong hold on the game at all stages to eventually emerge victorious by six runs.

Talking about the final, Australian captain Meg Lanning won the toss and chose to put runs on the board in the summit clash.

All eyes were set on Australia’s big-match player Alyssa Healy as she walked out to the middle to open the innings. However, Marizanne Kapp sent her back to the pavilion cheaply before she could do the initial damages for her the Women in Yellow. After losing Healy cheaply, Beth Mooney stabilised the Australian innings with her gritty knock.

Ashleigh Gardner also gave good support to Mooney scoring 29 off 21 balls. After 16 overs, Australia were 118/3 with Mooney unbeaten on 47 (40) and Meg Lanning on 9 off 6 balls.
