UP Warriorz’s young batting sensation Vrinda Dinesh had another disappointing outing in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 as she got dismissed for a five-ball duck during Match 4 against Delhi Capitals Women on Monday, February 26. Opening the innings alongside her captain Alyssa Healy, Dinesh failed to get going as she sliced a wide delivery from Marizanne Kapp straight to Shikha Pandey at third man in the third over of the innings.

As a result, the right-handed batter continued her poor form. Earlier, in her first outing of the tournament, Dinesh once again struggled to score and got dismissed for 18 (28) against Royal Challenger Bangalore Women’s Asha Sobhana. The beginning of the WPL hasn’t gone quite well for the 22-year-old who made history during the auction for the second season.

Notably, Dinesh became the first uncapped player to fetch over a 1 crore deal at the WPL mini-auction held in December 2023. She began at her base price of INR 10 Lakh at the auction which went up to INR 1.30 Crore as Gujarat Giants, UP Warriorz, and the Royal Challengers Bangalore were in a bidding war to have the youngster on their team. However, it was UP who managed to acquire her services.

Dinesh has proven her batting prowess time and again at the domestic level scoring a plethora of runs at several tournaments. However, the talented youngster is yet to get accustomed to the demands of the big stage of WPL.

Marizanne Kapp and Radha Yadav leave UP in trouble

Meanwhile, coming back to the UP Warriorz vs Delhi Capitals Women game, after being put in to bat first, UP were blown away by a sensational opening spell by Marizanne Kapp (3/5). The right-arm seamer dismissed Dinesh, Tahlia McGrath (1 off 8) and Alyssa Healy (13 off 15) to leave UP tottering at 16/3.

After Kapp’s new-ball spell, left-arm spinner Radha Yadav kept the pressure on UP as she scalped 4/20 in four overs which included a crucial scalp of Grace Harris (17 off 18). Only Shweta Sehrawat played a good knock for UP scoring 45 (42) with the help of five fours and one six. Courtesy of her knock, UP posted 119/9 on the board in their allotted 20 overs.
