Days after an incredulous 10-wicket loss at the hands of the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, followed by the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants, Sanjiv Goenka, venting out his frustration on the sidelines towards his side's skipper, KL Rahul, Indian pace-bowling spearhead, Mohammed Shami, came out in Rahul's defence.
The pacer, currently nursing a right heel issue which ruled him out of IPL 2024, stated how the incident was a "shame". He also expressed displeasure over it happening in the open.
“Players have respect, and you are a respectful person, too, as you are an owner. Many people are watching you and learning from you. If these things happen in front of cameras, yeh sharam ki baat hai (it's a matter of shame),” said Shami while speaking to Cricbuzz.
It wasn't necessary to do it on the field: Shami
Shami further supported Rahul, emphasizing that unexpected events and wins and losses are run-of-the-mill in sports. He also said that there are other ways in which Goenka could have appraised Rahul on how he felt, most probably in the confines of a room. Shami believed that the argument portrayed a blatantly incorrect impression of how displeasure should be expressed.

"If you have to do that, there are many different ways. You could've done the same thing in the dressing room or the hotel. It wasn't necessary to do it on the field. It's a team game; if the plan isn't successful, it isn't a big thing. Anything is possible in the game. I understand there can be good or bad days, but every player has respect, and there's a way to talk. This sends a very wrong message,” expressed Shami.
