'You don't treat human beings that way' - Michael Holding backs calls for humane treatment of Imran Khan

Michael Holding has expressed deep concern about the well-being of former Pakistan captain Imran Khan, who has been held in Pakistani custody since August 5, 2023, while facing multiple legal cases. The legendary West Indian fast bowler joined a growing chorus of international cricket figures calling for Khan to receive basic human treatment and proper conditions during his detention.

Khan's situation has drawn significant international scrutiny. The former Pakistan captain's family has raised serious concerns about his access to reading materials and the adequacy of medical facilities provided to him while in custody. In February 2026, Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered authorities to establish a medical board to examine Khan's eyes following reports of vision loss in one of them. Also, it directed that he be allowed contact with his children.

Twenty-one international captains, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, wrote to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urging authorities to ensure basic amenities for Khan.

Personal connection shapes Holding's stance

Holding's personal connection with Khan shaped his stance. The former West Indian bowler recalled his time with Khan during fundraising efforts for the cancer hospital in London.

"I am in total support of the captains who wrote that letter. I don't know what effect it will have, but I am in total support of trying to get the man to be treated just like another human being. You don't treat human beings that way. People who have committed murder aren't treated that way. So I don't see the reason why this man should be treated that way," Holding was quoted as saying by The Times of India.

"When Imran was going around London looking to garner funds for that cancer hospital, I went around with him, I tried to support him as best as I possibly could, where that was concerned. So I know the man, and I know exactly what type of person that he is. And it's extremely sad to see the situation now and what is going on with Imran Khan," Holding added.

The former West Indies bowler also suggested that Khan's immense global popularity could be one of the factors behind the treatment he has received. Holding pointed out that the former Pakistan captain remains one of the country's most recognisable figures worldwide.

"I don't know if there's jealousy involved in this, because Imran Khan. I don't think there's a Pakistani that is more well known around the world than Imran Khan. That is ridiculous, the way the man is being treated," Holding said.

International support for Khan's humane treatment

Khan's detention has drawn international scrutiny beyond the cricket community. Several prominent former cricketers, including Pat Cummins, Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad and Brian Lara, have also spoken in support of ensuring Khan receives humane treatment.
