Pakistan managed a hard-fought seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the sixth match of the ongoing New Zealand tri-series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, October 13. Even though the Bangladesh Tigers ended up on the losing side, they ensured that they gave Pakistan a run for their money before bowing out of the competition.

Since New Zealand and Pakistan had already made it to the finals, this match was just a formality. Moreover, the Men in Green's opening pair of skipper Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan was among the runs in this dress rehearsal for the final.

Pakistan make bold statement before final

Batting first Bangladesh found themselves in a spot of bother at 41/2 inside the powerplay before Litton Das and skipper Shakib Al Hasan carried out the rescue act. The duo added 88 runs for the third wicket with both batters scoring their respective half-centuries.

Litton scored 69 runs off 42 deliveries, while Shakib made a 42-ball 68. Unfortunately for Bangladesh, after these two were dismissed, the lower order failed to make any contributions with the bat as a result of which the Asian side was restricted to 173/6.

Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim were the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan with two wickets each while Mohammad Nawaz chipped in with one scalp.

In reply, Babar and Rizwan ensured a brisk start for Pakistan. The duo added 101 runs for the opening stand before Babar was sent back for a 40-ball 55. Pakistan suffered an immediate setback losing youngster Haider Ali as he perished without troubling the scorers.

At that point it appeared as if back-to-back wickets would help Bangladesh in staging a much-needed comeback in this contest. But it was not to be as a well-set Rizwan continued the onslaught and got some good support from Nawaz.

Rizwan was dismissed in the penultimate over after scoring 69 runs from 56 deliveries. Nawaz and Asif Ali then completed the formalities in the final over. Nawaz remained unbeaten on 45 runs off 20 deliveries.

For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets while Soumya Sarkar picked up one.
