Instances of sexual harassment, especially when it’s against women, is not uncommon in India. And in sports as well, the issue is one of the major concerns. Just days after cricketer Mohammad Kaif made headlines after being subjected to religious shaming on social media for uploading a picture of him celebrating Christmas with his family, actress and cricket host Mandira Bedi became the latest victim of this vague outrage.

The actor, who is known for her roles in Bollywood flicks like ‘Shanti’ and ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ and later as a cricket show host took to her Twitter account and posted a picture with a motivational message with 2017 coming to an end. The post, however, garnered a lot of positive and negative reactions as trolls started calling out the former cricket host for her choice of dressing. The lewd comments disgraced the ageless diva with some even calling her a ‘shameless wife’.

Thankfully, much like the law of conversation, the evil is countered by the good as a section of sensible social media users supported and appreciated her. The 45-year-old is admired by her fans for her intense fitness regime which has helped her in maintaining an amazing body.

Troubling times for women athletes

Mandira Bedi is not the first victim of such hate-mongering. And she won’t be the last either. Indian sportswomen like Dipika Pallikal, Tania Sachdev, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, to name a few, even have dedicated pages for the sole purpose of their objectification and shaming.

Women athletes are often subjected to sexual harassment – they are condemned for their choice of attire and objectified beyond imagination. And most of the times, these women are forced to accept the circumstances as the authorities turn a blind eye, which is worse.
