Cricket South Africa (CSA) held its annual ceremony in Johannesburg on Saturday where Kagiso Rabada scooped all but two of the eight awards available to him. His impact with the ball and as a cricketer in the team has been huge over the past year which was visible in the six awards which he won. Undoubtedly, he was named the South African Cricketer of the Year in the Men’s category while the skipper of the Women’s team Dane Van Niekerk earned the same title for her exploits in the Women’s category.

The 23-year-old won both the ODI and Test cricketer of the year while also being named as the SA Fans and SA Players’ Player of the Year. Interestingly, the delivery with which he dismissed David Warner in the third Test at Newlands was honoured the Ram Delivery of the Year. Rabada deserved all the accolades as he scalped a massive 72 wickets in 13 Tests during the period and also became the top Test bowler in the ICC Rankings. Though he was not so good in the ODIs, with only 11 wickets, he was always there for the team which struggled for most parts.

The CSA acting Chief Executive Thabang Moroe was delighted to witness the youngsters winning all the awards. “It is encouraging that for the second time in a row our premier awards have gone to our young stars who are shining with distinction alongside our world-class senior players,” he was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

De Villiers named T20I player

AB de Villiers, who recently retired from international cricket, won the T20 International Player of the Year as David Miller was honoured with KFC Colonel’s Always Original Award for his record-breaking century in the format against Bangladesh last year. Meanwhile, Aiden Markram deservedly won the International Newcomer of the Year award after amassing 1000 runs at an average of 55.55 in his first 10 Tests.

In the Women’s category, apart from Niekerk, teenager Laura Wolvaardt was named Women’s ODI Player of the Year as well as SA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year. Chloe Tryon was honoured with the T20I Player of the Year award. As far as the domestic cricket is concerned, major awards were won by the Titans as they laid their hands on both the Sunfoil series and the Ram Slam T20 trophies.
