South Africa (SA) and Afghanistan (AFG) are set to face each other in the 2023 ODI World Cup on November 10 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Afghanistan have been delivering impressive performances in the tournament and stand as contenders for a spot in the semi-finals. In their recent match, Afghanistan faced a three-wicket defeat against Australia, marked by Glenn Maxwell's remarkable show. In the batting department, Ibrahim Zadran achieved a historic milestone by scoring Afghanistan's first century in ODI World Cups. He remained unbeaten with an outstanding score of 129 runs, featuring eight fours and three sixes.
Other Afghan batters also made valuable contributions, with Rahmat Shah scoring 30, Rahmanullah Gurbaz adding 21, Hashmatullah Shahidi 26 and Azmatullah Omarzai 22. In the final overs, Rashid played a power-packed cameo, accumulating 35 off 18s, including two fours and three sixes, helping Afghanistan set a competitive total of 291 runs.
In the bowling department, Afghanistan made a strong start, reducing Australia to 91/7 in 18.3 overs. However, Maxwell's exceptional double-century turned the match in Australia's favor. Naveen-ul-Haq, Omarzai and Rashid each picked two wickets, but their efforts could not save the match against Maxwell's remarkable performance.
On the flip side, South Africa are in excellent form and have successfully qualified for the semi-finals. However, in their recent match, they faced a significant defeat against India, falling short by a margin of 243 runs.
In the bowling department, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi all managed to take one wicket each, restricting India to 326/5 in 50 overs—a challenging target for the Proteas. However, their batting performance in the chase was a déjà vu, as they were all-out for only 83 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja's five-for and Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami's two-fors played a crucial role in South Africa's downfall. The Proteas will aim to bounce back from this devastating loss as they prepare for semi-finalchallenges in the tournament.
