Eliminated teams India and Afghanistan will square off against each other in a dead rubber in the Super 4 round of Asia Cup 2022 on Thursday, September 08, 2022, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Pakistan’s thrilling and exhilarating one-wicket victory over the Afghans the previous night in Sharjah meant both India and Mohammad Nabi’s side got knocked out of the tournament. It set up a final date between 2014 finalists Sri Lanka and Pakistan on September 11.
Speaking about both India and Afghanistan’s performances in the Super 4 round, both teams lost their respective first two fixtures. After a promising start to the competition with wins over Pakistan and Hong Kong, Rohit Sharma and his team lost the plot by losing both Super 4 games. It was Mohammad Rizwan and Nawaz who helped Pakistan in defeating their arch rivals while a spirited Sri Lankan team stunned the seven-time champions India with a six-wicket victory.
Afghanistan also sealed victories in their first two encounters but like India, they too suffered losses to the Lankan Lions and Pakistan. Coming back to this dead rubber, both teams will look at the bigger picture of the T20 World Cup, which is slated to begin next month in Australia. India would look to bring back Dinesh Karthik ahead of a struggling Rishabh Pant and will also like to give opportunities to all-rounders Axar Patel and Deepak Chahar.
