Australian white-ball skipper Aaron Finch dropped a bombshell on Saturday, announcing his retirement from the 50-over format ahead of the third ODI against the Kiwis in Cairns. Finch will continue to play for the Men in Yellow in the shortest format of the game and will lead the side in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

The explosive opener has been enduring a wretched run of form in ODI cricket, having managed just a handful of runs in his last seven outings, including a horror show against Zimbabwe. His misery was compounded in the ongoing Chappell–Hadlee series, after being dismissed for a duck in the second match.

Finch made his ODI debut for Australia in 2013 and has featured in 145 matches since, amassing 5401 runs with a healthy average of 39.13, striking at 87.83. The hard-hitting batter has been one of the stalwarts of the limited overs side and has numerous accolades to his name in this format of the game.

Third-most ODI centuries for Australia

When it comes to centuries in ODI cricket, the Australian skipper has got 17 to his name and is third on the list for most centuries for Australia in ODIs. He is behind teammate David Warner (18) and Mark Waugh (18) in second place with Ricky Ponting (29) at the summit.

Second-most ODI centuries as captain for Australia

Finch has also recorded six centuries during his captaincy stint with Australia, the second most by an Aussie skipper behind Ricky Ponting's astonishing 22 tons.

Joint-third for most centuries against one team in ODIs

The flamboyant batter has had some memorable batters against the English bowlers during his time in ODI cricket and has managed to topple them with seven centuries, the joint third highest against a single opponent in ODIs.

2015 World Cup winner

Finch won the coveted World Cup trophy with the national team in 2015 in front of a jubilant home crowd before leading them to their maiden T20 World title in 2021.

Australia's Men's ODI Player of the Year (2020)

Aaron Finch beat compatriots Usman Khawaja and David Warner to win Australia's men's ODI player of the Year award in 2020, with 1,141 runs at an average of 51.86. He also smashed four centuries during the voting period of the award, garnering him the most votes.
