Improved batting performances from Australia helped them post a competitive total of 263 in the first innings of the second Test against India played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Speaking about how the day panned out, Australia yet again won the crucial toss and opted to bat first in spin-friendly conditions. David Warner and Usman Khawaja started the day on a positive note as the duo put together a fifty partnership for the first wicket.

Mohammed Shami, however, made the breakthrough for India by setting up David Warner. Soon, Ravichandran Ashwin joined hands with Shami to dismiss the middle order trio of Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head and all of a sudden Australia were in trouble at 108/4. Usman Khawaja and Peter Handscomb led the recovery by playing some positive cricket as Khawaja went on to register his 20th half-century.

Handscomb, then played with the tail and remained unbeaten on 72 helping the Aussies post 263 in the first innings. For India, Mohammed Shami was the pick of bowlers for the spell of 4/60 and the duo of Ashwin and Jadeja picked three wickets each. India survived the scary last hour of the game as they ended the day without losing any wicket for 21 runs in nine overs.
