Batters and spinners helped New Zealand beat India by a margin of 21 runs in first of the three-match T20I series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday, January 27. All round performances from batters and spinners ensured New Zealand beat India and the visitors became the first team to defeat the Men in Blue at the venue.

Put into bat first, New Zealand started off in fine fashion with Finn Allen taking the attack to the Indian bowlers, as the opening pair of Devon Conway and Allen aggregated 43 runs inside the five over-mark.

But Washington Sundar brought India back into the game as he took two wickets in the fifth over while the scoreboard read 43/2.

However, Conway continued his red-hot form as he notched up his half-century and was ably supported by the likes of Glenn Phillips and Daryl Mitchell in the middle overs. Mitchell then smacked Arshdeep Singh for 27 runs in the last over as he notched up his fifty in 26 balls, helping New Zealand post an impressive total of 176/6 in 20 overs.

In response to 176, India got off to a horrid start to the chase as they lost their top order batters cheaply inside first four overs and were reeling at 15/3. However, the duo of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav kept India's hopes high with a 68-run partnership.

But it was Ish Sodhi who broke the partnership by dismissing Suryakumar. Hardik Pandya, the set batter was dismissed in the next over. Washington Sundar showed intent in the chase as he scored a half-century but it could only help India reduce the margin of defeat. New Zealand beat India by a difference of 21 runs to go 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series. Mitchell Santner was the pick of the bowlers with a spell of 2/11 in his four overs and bowled 18 dot balls, which also included a maiden over.
