Dilshan Madushanka’s spell of 3/24 and half-centuries from openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis helped Sri Lanka in handing a shocking defeat to tournament favorites India in Match 3 of the Super 4 round in Asia Cup 2022. Chasing 174 to win, skipper Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa also played their part by remaining unbeaten on 33 and 25 respectively to seal the third successive victory for their side in this campaign. With this loss, seven times champions India are almost knocked out of the tournament.

Speaking about how the match unfolded, Shanaka won the toss and elected to field first. KL Rahul got dismissed to spinner Maheesh Theekshana for just six while Virat Kohli bagged a four-ball duck. Captain Rohit Sharma looked in great touch today as he smashed 72 off 41, which included five fours and four maximums. Suryakumar Yadav made 34 of 29 while both Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya registered identical scores of 17 off 13 as India reached 173/8 in 20 overs with Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne picking up two wickets each.

Sri Lanka’s opening pair of Nissanka and Mendis gave their team a solid start with a 97-run partnership with the former amassing 52 off just 37 and Mendis 57 off 37. Both the right-handed batters laid the foundation for the middle order in pursuit of their run chase. The Lankan Lions did stumble in the middle with Yuzvendra Chahal picking up 3/34 in his spell, but Shanaka and Rajapaksa made sure they were there till the end to guide Sri Lanka to a victory. For his all-round performance, skipper Shanaka grabbed the Player of the Match award.
