RCB, on an upward curve after a six-match losing streak, blew the Gujarat Titans away on a very hot afternoon in Ahmedabad in match No. 45 of IPL 2024.
RCB chose to field and that decision almost immediately paid dividends as Swapnil Singh removed Wriddhiman Saha in the first over. Shubman Gill also could not get going and perished shortly after the powerplay. The Tamil Nadu pair of M Shahrukh Khan (58 off 30) and B Sai Sudharsan (84* off 49) then took over, posting 86 for the third wicket before a supporting innings by David Miller pushed GT to exactly 200.
RCB's chase did not start very smoothly as the openers struggled to get going, but once skipper Faf du Plessis (24 off 12) broke the shackles, RCB found it easier to go through. After du Plessis fell early in the powerplay, Virat Kohli (70* off 44) took over and provided some much-needed impetus to both his knock and RCB's innings to keep them afloat above the required run rate.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru took some time to get accustomed after losing du Plessis, but once Will Jacks(100* off 41) was settled, he completely stole the show from under GT's nose, with the highlight being a 27-run over off Mohit Sharma that just killed any chance that the Gujarat Titans might have thought that they had.
Let's take a look at all the stats from this match.
1 - B Sai Sudharsan and M Shahrukh Khan put up 86 for the third wicket. This is the highest partnership for GT for the third wicket surpassing the 81 by Hardik Pandya and Sudharsan in the final of the 2023 edition.
1 - This was the 28th time that RCB conceded a total of 200 or more. Only PBKS have conceded as many, and with this season's trends, this might just go up a bit more.
7 - In this match, Virat Kohli took his run tally for the season to 500, this is now the 7th IPL season where Virat Kohli has aggregated 500 runs or more. Only David Warner has played as many seasons aggregating 500 runs or more in the IPL.
2 - While Chris Gayle's 30-ball hundred in 2013 is the fastest in IPL history, Will Jacks reached his hundred in 41 deliveries, which is the second fastest for RCB.
4 - Will Jacks' 10 sixes are the fourth highest in an innings for RCB. He is also now only the third player to hit 10 sixes in an innings for RCB. Chris Gayle had three different instances of hitting more than 10 sixes in an innings for RCB with 17,13 and 12, while AB de Villiers had one instance of 12.
2 - This was only the second time in their history that RCB successfully chased down a target in excess of 200. The last time they did this was against PBKS at Mohali in 2010.
4 - Virat Kohli and Will Jacks' partnership of 166* is the fourth-highest for RCB for the second wicket. Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle had an unbeaten partnership of 204 in 2012, while Kohli and de Villiers had two different partnerships of 229 and 215, the latter unbeaten. For any wicket, Kohli and Jacks put up the seventh-highest partnership.
