Clinical performances with both bat and ball handed New Zealand a massive five-wicket win with 160 balls to spare against Sri Lanka in match number 41 of ICC ODI World Cup 2023 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. New Zealand are on the verge of another semi-final berth.

Speaking about the game, put into bat first, Sri Lanka got off to an awful start as their in-form batter Pathum Nissanka edged one to the keeper for 2 as Southee drew the first blood for New Zealand. Kusal Perera went berserk against the likes of New Zealand quicks as he notched up the fastest fifty of World Cup 2023, his 51 off 28 included 11 boundaries.

Boult rattled the Sri Lankan solid middle order as Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka after being the victims of Trent Boult, the Lankans were left reeling at 70/5 inside the powerplay. Dhananjaya de Silva and Angelo Matthews led the rescue with a 34-run stand for the sixth wicket before Mitchell Struck twice in his consecutive over to pick both Matthews and De Silva with beautiful deliveries.

Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka frustrated the Kiwi’s bowlers with 43 runs stand off 87 balls to help Sri Lanka post 171 in 50 overs. Trent Boult was the pick of bowlers for his spell of 3/37 in 10 overs While Santner, Ferguson and Ravindra picked two wickets each.

Chasing 172, New Zealand got off to a flier as both Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra added 86 runs for the first wicket before Chameera drew the first blood by dismissing Conway for 45 while Ravindra got dismissed for 42. Daryl Mitchell then came in with a quick-fire cameo scoring 31-ball 43 while Glenn Phillips and Tom Latham remained unbeaten as the Kiwis sealed a victory by five wickets inside 25 overs. Angelo Matthews picked up yet another two wickets for Sri Lanka.
