Courtesy of a stellar bowling display from Arshdeep Singh (5/37 in 10 overs) and Avesh Khan (4/27 in 8 overs), followed by composed fifties from  the duo of Sai Sudharsan and Shreyas Iyer helped India beat over South Africa by eight wickets in the 1st ODI of  India tour of South Africa, 2023-24  at New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg 

Early in the game winning the toss, South Africa elected to bat first, but their innings quickly crumbled. With only Tony de Zorzi (28) and Andile Phehlukwayo (33) offering notable resistance, the rest of the batters fell cheaply. The Proteas were eventually bowled out for a mere 116 thanks to superb bowling performances from Arshdeep Singh (5/37 in 10 overs) and Avesh Khan (4/27 in 8 overs). Kuldeep Yadav also chipped in with a wicket. 

Chasing target, India lost Ruturaj Gaikwad early for five runs. However, debutant Sai Sudharsan and Shreyas Iyer stitched together a magnificent partnership of 88 runs. Iyer reached his fifty before being dismissed by Phehlukwayo, but Sudharsan remained unbeaten on 55 to guide India to a comfortable eight-wicket victory with 200 balls remaining.Arshdeep Singh's outstanding bowling performance earned him the Player of the Match award, capping off a dominant display for India 

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from the 1st ODI between South Africa and India: 

3 - Arshdeep Singh's 5/37 against South Africa is the third-best bowling figure by an Indian bowler in South Africa. The best bowling figures are 6/23, taken by Ashish Nehra against England at Durban. The second best is Yuzvendra Chahal's 5/22 against South Africa at Centurion in 2018. 

3 - India bowled out South Africa for 116, and it is their third-lowest total in ODIs against India. Their lowest total was 83 at Eden Gardens in 2023, and the second-lowest is 99 against South Africa in Delhi in 2022. 

6/52 - South Africa's collapse of 6 for 52 runs is their lowest score at the fall of the 6th wicket at home in ODIs. The previous lowest was 6 for 66 against Australia at Johannesburg, back in 2002. 

116 - South Africa's 116 all-out is their lowest ODI total at home, their previous record of 118 also against India in 2018 at Centurion. 

1-Indian pacers took nine wickets, the highest number of wickets for Indian pacers in an ODI innings against South Africa. The previous record was eight wickets, achieved on two occasions at Mohali in 1993 and at Centurion in 2013.

 4 - Arshdeep Singh becomes the fourth India bowler to pick up five-wicket haul against South Africa in ODIs.

4 - India's win against South Africa with 200 balls remaining marks the fourth-biggest ODI victory for India in terms of balls remaining. The biggest win is 263 against Sri Lanka at Colombo RPS in 2023, followed by 231 against Kenya at Bloemfontein in 2001 and 211 against West Indies at Thiruvananthapuram in 2018. 

 2 - South Africa's defeat to India, with 200 balls remaining, marks their second-biggest ODI loss in terms of balls left. The Proteas' biggest defeat is with 215 balls, remaining  against England at Nottingham in 2008.

 17 Sai Sudharsan (55*) becomes 17th Indian batter to score fifty-plus runs on ODI debut.

 4 - Sai Sudharsan becomes the third-joint Indian opener to score 50+ runs on their ODI debut. He ties this record with Faiz Fazal (55*) against Zimbabwe in 2016. The first Indian opener to have achieved this feat was Robin Uthappa (86) who did it against England in 2006. KL Rahul (100*) became the second Indian opener to accomplish this against Zimbabwe in 2016.
