Temba Bavuma’s South Africa (SA) kick off their World Cup campaign by locking horns with Dasun Shanaka’s Sri Lanka (SL) in match No. 4 of the showpiece event. The encounter is scheduled to take place on a doubleheader Super Saturday, October 7, 2023, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Earlier in the day, Asian sides Bangladesh will come up against Afghanistan at the picturesque HPCA stadium.
The Proteas recently defeated Australia 3-2 in a five-match one-day international series back home. After losing the opening two fixtures, the home side bounced back brilliantly to seal the series. Their opening warm-up game with Afghanistan was abandoned due to rain, and they suffered a seven-run defeat (DLS Method) against New Zealand in the second practice match.
On the other hand, the Lankan Lions got hammered in the Asia Cup final by India just before the start of the marquee tournament. Shanaka’s men also lost both of their warm-up games against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. South Africa, who has never lifted the elusive trophy, will look to start their campaign on a high with a number of destructive and explosive players in their ranks now. The 1996 champions Sri Lanka will also hope to turn things around quickly and claim a victory in their opening fixture in the capital city of India.
