Maharashtra opener Ruturaj Gaikwad wreaked havoc as he slammed a double century which included seven sixes in an over off the bowling of Uttar Pradesh’s spinner Shiva Singh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarter-final clash on Monday, November 28, 2022, in Ahmedabad. With this feat, the destructive opening batter became the first player ever to hit seven consecutive sixes in an over in the history of white-ball cricket.

Gaikwad’s side batted first and posted a mammoth total of 330/5 in their allotted 50 overs. The right-handed player Gaikwad struck an unbeaten 220 off just 159 with the help of ten fours and 16 maximums at a strike rate of 138.16. Courtesy of his spectacular innings, Maharashtra won the encounter by 58 runs to book their place in the semi-final. The 25-year-old youngster also became the seventh India to register a double century in Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Talking about the explosive over that caused mayhem, Gaikwad took Singh to the cleaners in the penultimate over of Maharasthra’s innings. The spinner conceded 43 runs with seven maximums and a no-ball. It also turned out to be the joint-most expensive over in List A cricket’s history, previously achieved by Northern District’s Joe Carter and Brett Hampton in New Zealand’s domestic 50-over match in the year 2018.

1 – Ruturaj Gaikwad became the first player ever to smash seven successive sixes in an over in the history of limited-overs cricket.

16 – Gaikwad is now joint-top with Rohit Sharma for smacking the most maximums (16) by an Indian in a List A cricket innings. Rohit achieved the feat against Australia in Bangalore ODI in 2013.

42 – Ruturaj has now hammered the most runs (42) by a batter in an over in white-ball cricket.

4 – The Maharasthra opener became the fourth player to hit more than six sixes in an over in List A cricket. Former South African Herschelle Gibbs against the Netherlands in 2007, USA’s Jaskaran Malhotra against PNG in 2021, and Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera against Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club in 2021, all smashed six sixes each.

43 – Gaikwad racked up 43 runs in the 49th over of the innings, which is the joint-most expensive over in the history of List A matches. Northern District’s pair of Brett Hampton and Joe Carter accumulated 43 runs off the bowling of Willem Ludick in the Ford Trophy in 2018.

220* - The 25-year-old opener recorded the highest individual score of 220* in knockouts of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Previously, Karnataka’s Ravikumar Samarth scored 192 against Kerala in the 2021 edition.

58.71 – Ruturaj has now the highest average of 58.71 with a minimum of 50 innings in List A cricket. Sam Hain is in the second spot with a 58.54 average.

1 – The right-handed opening batter Gaikwad now holds the record for the highest individual score of 220* for Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He surpassed Ankit Bawne’s score of 184* against Puducherry this season.
