One of the biggest cricketing trends of recent weeks is towards its fag end, with The Ashes one day away from culmination. After retaining the Urn with a sensational performance in Manchester, the Aussies looked a little derailed in the final Test, allowing the English to pounce on them and take complete control of the game.
Steve Smith‘s Ashes came to an end with 774 runs, with him getting dismissed for a score less than 50 for the first time in this series in the final innings. The genius batsman managed to go past 700 runs in a series for the third time in his career, a record mastered only by the greatest master of all time, Sir Donald Bradman (5 times).
The series had contrasting emotions for David Warner, who got dismissed for the seventh time in the hands of Stuart Broad. The southpaw ended up with less than 100 runs in the series, his worst performance in a three-match series or more. English bowlers Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad were the saving grace for the side, who were relatively underwhelming, especially after winning the ICC World Cup a few months ago.
Towards the subcontinent, while the whole world was expecting a cracker of a contest between South Africa and India at the picturesque Dharamshala, rain gods intervened without an invitation and the action was abandoned without a ball being bowled. It was supposed to be Quinton de Kock’s first T20I as a captain for South Africa, but it looks like they will have to wait for a few more days to get on the field.
