The cricketing trends on social media revolved around a number of events. The Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia with the opening match between the hosts and India at the Sydney Showground Stadium. After being put in to bat first, the Women in Blue huffed and puffed to 132 in their 20 overs. India lost their way on the middle after an opening wicket stand of 41 in four overs. In the end, Deepti Sharma’s 49 took India to the respectable score in Sydney. But the Player of the Match went to Poonam Yadav, who picked up a four-wicket haul. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur held him back for the latter overs and the tweaker stepped up big time.
From Australia, opener Alyssa Healy scored a half-century and Ashleigh Gardener got 34. Barring the duo, none of the hosts’ batter could enter the double digits. After India won, they were showered with praises from every nook and corner of the country. The likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and a number of renowned dignitaries lauded Kaur and Co for the stupendous show in the opening encounter.
Jemimah Rodrigues, who couldn’t get a lot of runs, was in awe of the support for the Women in Blue. Aakash Chopra praised Taniya Bhatia for his sharp piece of glovework behind the wickets. Meanwhile, Pragyan Ojha hung his boots from all forms of cricket with immediate effect. Parthiv Patel, who’s playing for Gujarat in the 2019-20 edition of the Ranji Trophy, wished him luck for his future endeavours.
