The cricketing trends on social media mostly revolved around the second semi-final of the World Cup between Australia and England at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Aussies could only manage 223 in their 50 overs. Steve Smith (85) and Alex Carey (46) did a chunk of the scoring. Carey got hit on the chin by a bouncer from Jofra Archer, but the batsman carried on.
Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell scored in the 20s. The English pacers were outstanding in the first few overs. Archer along with Chris Woakes didn’t allow the Aussie batters to get away. Aaron Finch perished for a golden duck to Archer. David Warner and Peter Handscomb, who came in place of Usman Khawaja, got out cheaply as well. For the Brits, Adil Rashid and Woakes picked up three crucial wickets apiece.
After the brilliant show, Kevin Pietersen was a satisfied lot and he praised skipper Eoin Morgan for his field placements and rotation of bowlers. RP Singh was happy with the English bowling and also lauded Carey for his grit and determination. He also asked not to undermine the Australian attack. Brad Hogg said that the target of 224 should be enough for Australia. For Tom Moody, the Aussies were 50 runs short.
Ian Bishop felt that Archer bowled like someone with an experience of 10 years in international cricket. On Wednesday, India bowed out of the tournament after their 18-run defeat to New Zealand in Manchester. Mithali Raj, the Indian women’s legend, tweeted for the Men in Blue. The likes of Kuldeep Yadav and Rishabh Pant was over the moon after getting to represent India in the mega event.
