The cricketing trends on social media today revolved around the last day of the league stage of the ongoing World Cup in England and Wales. India and Australia are fighting for the top spot and they were challenged well by two knocked-out sides, Sri Lanka and South Africa respectively. Angelo Mathews slammed an impressive ton after his team was struggling at 55/4 and his love affair with Headingley continued.
He scored 113 runs with 10 fours and a couple of sixes during his stay in the middle and the fraternity was all praise for him. Even the former Indian cricketers lauded the knock as Sri Lanka’s one of the very best was back in the mix after the horrendous start to the World Cup. Shoaib Malik retired from the One-Day International format with Pakistan’s last game in the World Cup and the veteran got a guard of honour from his team-mates.
A lot of former cricketers lauded Malik for his contribution to the sport but the man himself didn’t play in the last match courtesy the team combination. He endured a mediocre mega event and after bagging a golden duck against the arch-rivals India. Shaun Pollock was excited for South Africa’s last league game of the tournament against Australia.
The Proteas, however, got off to a brilliant start and will be looking to give a fitting send-off to two of their superb cricketers. JP Duminy and Imran Tahir are playing their last ODI and they have been excellent servants of South Africa Cricket over the years. Even the duo would be itching to end on a high.
