Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad has created many superstars for India in the last decade. Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Jwala Gutta are all products of this brilliant academy. While they had some serious talent, credit must go to Gopichand for providing the right guidance to nurture these talents into superstars of the sport. This academy has produced another splendid player, Kidambi Srikanth.

Srikanth was on a roll last month. He reached finals of 3 tournaments in a row and has won last 2 tournaments. He has beaten some top players en route to the titles, he has defeated world no.1 Son Wan Ho twice in 2 weeks. He has also beaten Chinese top-ranked shuttler Shi Yuqi twice. To top off these big triumphs he won Indonesian Open Superseries, which is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the sport.

These victories meant he rose in rankings and became world no.11. Fair to say after such a successful fortnight Srikanth came to Sydney with lots of confidence. He didn’t disappoint, reaching the final again. But this time he came up against Chinese legend, Chen Long who is Olympic gold medallist and world champion. The Indian shuttler was up to the task and won the match in straight games.

The first game was quite a close affair but Srikanth held his nerves and won it 22-20. Srikanth was always in control in the second game and won it with relative ease to close out the match and won the 4th super series of his career.

Srikanth is future of badminton

Kidambi Srikanth was ranked 11 in the latest ranking, which will certainly rise after this win. He shot to prominence when he beat Lin Dan, (who is arguably the greatest to grace the badminton court in history) in the final of China Superseries in 2014. Lin Dan had called him ‘a complete player’.

Srikanth also pushed Lin Dan all the way in the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics before bowing out but that performance earned him a lot of praise. With the kind of form he has displayed, it is exciting times ahead for Indian badminton.

Cricketing universe came on Twitter to applaud Srikanth’s efforts

To Master Blaster’s tweet, https://twitter.com/SunRisers/status/878861923663491072Srikanth replied saying
