Indian women’s skipper Mithali Raj has taken great strides in her career ever since her debut in international cricket 1999. Although it was not an easy task, she played one of the pivotal roles in encouraging the sports amongst women and helping India reach their present success.
Mithali led the Indian eves to the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup and gave the country a hope to life their first maiden title. However, India lost the opportunity after being eclipsed by hosts England in the summit clash at Lord’s. With the win at Lord’s, England won their fourth World Cup trophy, and in the process, destroyed India’s maiden chance to win a World Cup. Although the Indian eves were dubbed as the dark horses in the tournament, their journey in the quadrennial event was remarkable.
Raj is widely considered to be one of the greatest batters in the history of the sport and is the only female cricketer to score more than 6000 runs in ODI cricket. She has soldiered the Indian innings on several occasions. And, in the process, Mithali has shattered records after records only to become the leading run-scorer in women’s ODIs with a tally of 6,190 runs in 186 matches.
She is also the first player to score seven straight half-centuries in ODIs. Raj has easily been one of India’s most outstanding athletes at the world stage and her record in ODI cricket is second to none.
And today is a special day for the Indian skipper as she celebrates her 35th birthday. Several cricketers took to social media to send their regards on her special day.
