Cricket South Africa (CSA) has announced a revised date for the Solidarity Cup, which was originally scheduled to be played on June 27. The 3T cricket match would now be played at the popular SuperSport Park in Centurion on Saturday, July 18, which also happens to be the Nelson Mandela International Day. The match would take place from 11 AM (SAST).

The game is a fund-raiser and the proceeds would go to the ones affected in the COVID-19 pandemic. Three teams would be playing in a 36-over contest in a never-before-seen format. Kagiso Rabada, Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers were named the captains of the respective teams.

Quite expectantly, the CSA is excited for the game to take place on the historic day. The board also reckons that the postponement of the match has given the players adequate time to get themselves prepared.

Solidarity Cup to take place on a historic day

“It’s very exciting to get live cricket featuring our top players back on our TV screens again. I can’t think of a more appropriate day on which to hold this game than Nelson Mandela Day when its prime objective is to raise funds for those who have been badly affected by the coronavirus,” CSA acting chief executive Dr Jacques Faul, was quoted as saying in Eyewitness News.

“It is still nearly three weeks away, so it also gives our players more time to prepare properly and to minimise the chance of injuries,” he stated.

“I would like to thank the government and our own medical team once again for everything they have done to make a return to training and playing possible and I would also like to add special thanks to the incredible sponsors involved in this event for their continued commitment towards the match and its beneficiary, the Hardship Fund,” Faul added.

The teams featuring in the tournament are AB’s Eagles, Quinny’s Kites and KG’s Kingfishers. Each team has eight players each and the game will be played in two halves of 18 overs each. Earlier, Dr Shuaib Manjra, the CSA’s chief medical officer, said that players need to follow the COVID-19 protocols, bearing in mind how contagious the virus has been.
