In a big development coming from South Africa, ex-cricketer and former head coach of domestic team Jozi Stars Enoch Nkwe has been appointed as Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) new Director of Cricket on June 30 (Thursday). He replaced former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith.

To note, the Proteas side was recently involved in a five-match T20I series against India. The visitors put on an excellent show as they won two matches in the series and were in a commanding position in the fifth T20I before the rain interrupted the match and it got called off. Meanwhile, Nkwe now has the responsibility to take South African cricket forward and CSA would have high hopes from him.

“With a proven track record of using excellent personal, communication, and organization skills to lead and improve cricketing systems, recruit excellent personnel, and improve team efficiencies, Enoch was Strategic Cricket Consultant at Lions Cricket,” CSA said in a statement.

“His responsibilities included assisting in managing, monitoring, and conducting the Men’s National Team’s daily training environment including facilities and coaches, daily schedules, session plans, player workloads, player communication, and provided input, insight, and guidance to help inform the discussions of the National Selection Panel.”

Enoch Nkwe has served as interim director before

As mentioned above, Nkwe replaced Graeme Smith, whose three-year tenure came to an end in March 2021. To note, the domestic veteran has previously served as the interim Team Director in 2019 before the former left-handed batter Smith was given the responsibility.

Talking about Nkwe’s career, he played 42 First-Class games, 38 List-A games, and has nine T20 encounters. In 2016, the veteran was appointed as Netherland’s assistant coach. Two years later, Nkwe was named as head coach of Highveld Lions. In his very first season at the helm, the Lions won both the CSA T20 Challenge and the First-Class competition. The domestic legend will now look to ensure that the national team touches new heights under his tenure. Nkwe will also have his focus on the domestic circuit in South Africa.
