The South Africa T20 League, formed by Cricket South Africa (CSA), is slated to be played next year, and the six franchises have already started roping players ahead of the inaugural edition.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK)-owned Johannesburg franchise on August 21 (Sunday) roped in several star players, including former CSK opening batter Faf du Plessis and two current players, including Moeen Ali and Maheesh Theekshana. The Johannesburg team has also signed up contracts with West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd and Gerald Coetzee for the inaugural edition.

Both Moeen and du Plessis are currently participating in The Hundred competition, while Shepherd has been performing national duties lately as he was a part of the West Indies squad taking on New Zealand in the T20I fixtures recently. As far as Coetzee is concerned, he has not made his international debut but has performed extremely well after scalping 83 wickets in the domestic arena.

“As per the rules of CSA, we are eligible to take four players from the contracted list of available players… one marquee player from South Africa. From the balance, three, not more than two can be from one country,” K. S Viswanathan, the CEO of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited, was quoted as saying after the signings.

“We have decided to pick Faf, Moeen, Maheesh, and Romario as the four players who have been contracted by Cricket South Africa. We are also allowed to take one development player from South Africa. We have decided on Gerald, as recommended by Faf. He has been the backbone of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL for the last 10 years. He has been one of the most consistent players for our team. We were not fortunate to pick him during the last auction in the IPL,” he added.
