The Chennai Super Kings’ much-anticipated comeback in the Indian Premier League (IPL) was going really well and the team made a winning start to their campaign, however, protests back home in Chennai forced them to move the home games out of the city just after the first match. When given an option CSK wanted to host the remaining six matches in Mumbai.

Their first choice was to play those games at the Brabourne Cricket Stadium in Mumbai. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wasn’t really thrilled to have one center host as many as 15 matches. The Wankhede Stadium apart from MI’s 7 home games will also stage two knockouts later in the tournament. Had they awarded CSK games to Mumbai it would’ve been 15 matches at one place.

Board gave them four options

As per TOI, BCCI had given CSK four choices – Visakhapatnam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pune and Rajkot to move their matches. Based on information from their source the daily mentioned that Super Kings’ demand to be allotted CCI was rejected by the board.

The board has tons of options with not just the top tier cities but the tier two centres also pretty much ready for hosting matches of the high profile tournament. “You can’t have 15 IPL matches in Mumbai alone. There are other cities as well, which can stage the matches,” a source said.

Since they were denied CCI, the board gave the Super Kings an option to rather pick Pune as the home venue as the MCA Stadium was already slated to host two qualifiers later in the tournament.

“It was CSK, which was given the option to choose from the venues given to them. They only opted for CCI which is close to Mumbai Indians‘ home ground,” the source added.

Since their skipper, MS Dhoni had already played in Pune as a part of the Rising Pune Supergiant and enjoys substantial backing from the fans the franchise agreed to this choice and the two parties agreed to this arrangement.
