Former Pakistani cricketer Younis Khan has backed the Pakistan team to beat India in their upcoming clash at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. The two teams are set to lock horns at Birmingham on June 4 in the tournament. Over the years, the only ICC event where Pakistan have nosed ahead of India is the Champions Trophy. However, in the previous edition, it was the Indian team that had defeated the men in green.

Despite that, Younis Khan believes that the Pakistani team has the talent to beat India this year. He noted that the confidence of beating India in the past will help the team. Also, the conditions in England this time around look very batting friendly. Hence, it will not be surprising to see a high scoring game on the cards when the arch-rivals clash.

“Pakistan have beaten India in the previous editions of the tournament and still have the ability to beat them. The conditions will be different for both Pakistan and India but the pitches are in good shape to support high totals,” quoted Younis Khan as per the quotes in Thenews.com.pk.

On skipper Sarfraz Ahmed

He further added that the tournament is a very good opportunity for the newly appointed Pakistani skipper Sarfraz Ahmed. If the team manages to do well here, this could well mean a new beginning for the Pakistan cricket. They are currently languishing at the 8th position in the ICC ODI rankings. While some cricketers earlier suggested that lack of power hitting is the area they need to improve, Younis Khan believes it is the fielding aspect that will hold the key.

“Sarfraz has the chance to take Pakistan cricket to the top by playing well in the tournament as he has a good team with him. However, Pakistan will have to focus on their fielding in order to win the matches,” he quoted.

On playing during Ramzan

Commenting on the fact that the players will be playing in the month of Ramzan, Younis noted that it is good in a way to keep the players healthy. However, batting can be tough while fasting in these games. “It is good for the players but also difficult for the batsman to bat during fast,” he quipped.
