Dale Steyn’s career has been plagued by a number of injuries owing to which he has had to remain on the sidelines for a significant part of his illustrious career. He made a comeback in South Africa’s recent Test series against Sri Lanka, but could only manage two wickets while the spinners did most of the work. He is currently playing for Hampshire in England’s County Championship.

Prior to the Lankan tour, he played a couple of first-class matches and has returned for the county in the tournament. However, the recent developments aren’t something positive for the Phalaborwa-born fast-bowler. Hampshire is currently playing Nottinghamshire in Southampton and is in a strong position having bowled out the visiting team for 166 after scoring 277 in the first innings.

Another injury for Steyn?

In the meantime, during Nottinghamshire’s first innings, Steyn went off the park midway through his 11th over. After bowling four balls of his 11th over, he had a chat with James Vince, Hampshire’s skipper, and then left the field as per reports in Sport24. Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson completed his over. The 35-year-old eventually finished with figures of 10.4-1-41-0.

There hasn’t been any further update on the reasons for him leaving the field. The speedster has thus far picked up seven wickets in the Division One of the championship that also includes a five-wicket-haul against Yorkshire in Southampton. The pacer has also represented the county in the ongoing T20 Blast in which he has notched five wickets from four encounters.

Steyn hasn’t played any limited-overs cricket for South Africa since 2016 and has only plied his trade in the longest format of the sport. The Proteas are scheduled to play their next Test series in December when Pakistan will tour the Rainbow nation. Moreover, with the World Cup to be played next year in England and Wales, Steyn will want to keep himself fit as the tournament comes nearby.
