Australian skipper, Steve Smith is unsurprisingly the No. 1 Test batsman in the world, the Ashes-winning captain and the record holder for the highest average in Test cricket, second only to the great Don Bradman. His time on the field is going well so far, but interestingly, even life off-field is sailing smooth for him.
Very recently, Smith got engaged to his girlfriend Dani Willis in New York. Despite planning everything out, he forgot to take one thing into consideration. Dani explains how Smith used his smartness to ensure that the proposal remained a surprise.
Street-smart Smith
He was planning on proposing to Dani at the top of the Rockerfeller Centre in New York. But he did not account for the metal detectors, which would go off if he passed through them with a ring in his pocket. But Smith cleared the hurdle with some quick thinking.
Speaking to Nine Network, Dani said, “He’s got to the security scanners with the ring in his pocket and gone ‘uh oh — what am I going to do here!’ Luckily I had a plastic bag with some water in it. And he was like ’oh, I’ll carry that bag for you’ and he slipped the ring box in there.”
“At the time I was like ’OK, thanks’. I thought it was a bit weird. But he snuck it through security.”
Dani’s words also give us some serious goals as she mentioned helping Smith during cricket practice. She is a law graduate and always finds the time to help Smith in his practice. The top batsman in the world, getting the Ashes urn back, being on the list of every World Test XI that exists, a supporting partner. What more can one want, right?
“Steve can be sitting at home and there’ll be no one at the cricket ground to feed balls,” Willis said. “So I’ll get the ‘hey, would you like to come and feed some balls?’ He sets everything up (with the bowling machine) and I just load the ball,” as reported by Sportswallah.
