Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy backed South African cricketer Lungi Ngidi for his stance on Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Lungi had favoured the protest against racism as “something that we need to take very seriously and like the rest of the world is doing, make the stand.” However, the pacer had to face criticism from his fellow mates Pat Symcox, Boeta Dippenaar, and Rudi Steyn.

Recently Sammy extended his support to Lungi and bashed the South African cricketers who passed nasty comments on the pacer. Notably, Daren was one of the first cricketers who publicly spoke on the existence of racism in the game of cricket. Sammy had shared some of his personal experiences of facing discrimination because of his skin colour.

Supporting Ngidi, the former captain wrote on Twitter that people slamming Lungi for his comment on BLM showcases why it is important to speak against this social evil. The all-rounder tweeted, “The fact that some past players have an issue with @NgidiLungi stance on #blacklivesmatter movement is actually the reason why we are still here today saying black lives matter. #standupbrother we here with u”

Lungi Ngidi criticized for supporting Black Lives Matter movement

The ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement gathered momentum following the death of an African-American man named George Floyd when a police officer pressed his knee on his neck. The incident triggered protests with many cricketers across the globe speaking up about racism.

Earlier this week, when the 24-year-old South Africa’s pacer extended his support to the movement against racism, he faced a backlash from the cricketers of his own country. Former South African cricketers Pat Symcox, Boeta Dippenaar, and Rudi Steyn had criticized him publicly for being more concerned about the citizens of some other countries rather than focusing on the discrimination going in their own nation.

“I believe the Proteas should make a stand against racism, but if they stand up for ‘Black Lives Matter’ while ignoring the way white farmers are daily being ‘slaughtered’ like animals, they have lost my vote,” wrote Steyn on his Facebook page.

Symcox and Dippenaar had slammed Ngidi saying that Black Lives Matter is nothing but a leftist political movement and the pacer should not try to involve Proteas in his belief.
