Coming from an Island that never witnessed an International cricketer, Darren Sammy led the Windies to WT20 titles in 2012 and 2016 to become the first captain with two WT20 trophies. In 2004, Sammy became the first Saint Lucian cricketer and later in 2010 became the first from his Island to lead the nation as well. The all-rounder, who is well known for his big-hitting ability low down the order, turned out to be a limited-overs specialist in the later part of his career after featuring in a handy number of Test matches.
On the occasion of Darren Sammy’s 34th birthday, we look at the numbers from his International career:
2 – Darren Sammy is one of the four captains to win multiple ICC tournaments. Clive Lloyd won consecutive World Cups while Ricky Ponting won consecutive World Cups and Champions Trophy. MS Dhoni won a World Cup, a WT20 and a Champions Trophy as captain.
2 – Number of fifties for Darren Sammy in ODI cricket coming off 20 balls. He scored fifties off 20 balls against South Africa in 2010 and against Australia in 2012 at home. Sammy, Shahid Afridi and Brendon McCullum are the only players with multiple fifties in 20 and fewer balls in the ODI cricket.
4/16 – Darren Sammy’s bowling figures of 4/16 in the 2011 T20I against India are the 2nd best bowling figures for a captain and the only 4-fer by a Windies skipper in T20I format. Among the five 4-fers picked up by the captains in T20Is, Sammy’s 4-fer is the only one coming in the losing cause.
5/26 – Sammy’s 5/26 against Zimbabwe in a T20I in 2010 is the only 5-wicket haul recorded by a Windies player in this format. Unfortunately, Sammy’s 5-fer is one of the four T20I 5-fers coming in the losing cause. Three of Sammy’s four five-fers in Test cricket also came in losing cause.
20 – Sammy’s 20-ball fifties against South Africa in 2010 and against Australia in 2012 are the fastest fifties for Windies in ODI cricket. Brian Lara and Kieron Pollard have fifties off 23 balls in this format for Windies.
52 – Number of innings Sammy batted in the T20I format without scoring a fifty. Thisara Perera (54) and Kevin O’Brien (52) are the only other to bat over 50 innings without scoring a fifty in this format.
100.05 – Sammy’s batting strike-rate in ODI cricket. He is one of the seven players and the only Windies player with 100+ S/R in ODI format after playing 100 matches.
241.67 – His batting S/R during the 58* off 24 balls in a 2010 ODI against South Africa is the highest for a Windies player in this format. Only Chris Gayle (248.38) had a higher S/R in an International innings for Windies than Sammy during his 31-ball 77 against South Africa in a 2015 T20I.
