Following his superb showing last season, Australian cricketer Aaron Finch was re-signed by Surrey for the whole of the 2017 NatWest T20 Blast. Featuring as an overseas player, he had scored 259 runs at a strike rate of 144.69 in six Blast games. He also averaged 48.66 in the Championship and Surrey did not waste time and secured his services as early as in December last year. Little had Finch known how beneficial the contract would be for him, just a few months later.

In the wake of the recent events, more than 230 Australian cricketers have been left ‘officially’ unemployed. The raging dispute between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketer’s Association (ACA) over a new pay deal has left the cricketers, including the men’s and women’s national team members without a contract. The whole saga has also put a cloud on the upcoming fixtures of Australia.

Even as Finch tweeted about departing for England to take part in the T20 Blast with Surrey, fellow national teammate David Warner requested him to put in a good word for himself, all in good humour, of course.

Finch responded by asking if Warner was looking to take his job. However, he did tag Surrey head coach Michael Di Venuto and asked him to take a look in. Warner further went on to tweet claiming that he can ‘wang’ as well.

Di Venuto, on his part, assured Warner that he will see what he can do.

It goes without saying that Surrey will only benefit if Warner joins them, the likelihood of which though, is a bare minimum. One of the most explosive batsmen in the world, Warner has proved his credentials in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and for the Australian national team. Currently unemployed, a county contract would benefit him as well.
