Sunrisers Hyderabad captain and the fulcrum of their top order David Warner smashed Piyush Chawla for a six over midwicket to reach the landmark 4000 runs in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With this six he became the first foreigner to amass 4000 runs in the IPL. SRH were up against the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the eliminator of the ongoing edition of IPL on (May 17) Wednesday night.

At the beginning of the game, Warner required 23 runs to reach the landmark figure but tight bowling by KKR bowlers made him wait till the ninth over of the innings. However, the rain affected game eventually went against the defending champions SRH as Kolkata defeated them by 7 wickets. KKR will now lock horns with Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier which will be played on Friday (May 19) in Bengaluru.

The swashbuckling Australian has been pretty consistent with the bat in this edition of the IPL for his franchise Hyderabad. Having crossed 600 runs in this season Warner is way ahead of all other players and thus sitting firmly in the race for the Orange Cap. Behind him in the tally is KKR captain Gautam Gambhir who has 486 runs to his name. The SRH skipper has a hundred under his belt which came against the Kolkata Knight Riders, earlier in the season. Hyderabad finished the league phase of IPL 10 at number three after they won 8 out of their 14 games.

Journey in IPL:

David Warner made his IPL debut with the Delhi Daredevils in 2009 and was retained by the franchise after they outbid others at the auction in 2011. After representing Delhi for five seasons he was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014 and since then he has been their most prolific run-scorer.

He also led the team to a maiden title victory in 2016. In the last edition of the IPL, Warner stood just one position behind Virat Kohli in the tally of the highest run-getters. He had amassed 848 runs at an average of 60.57 and a strike rate of 151.42. So far in his IPL career of 114 matches, he has scored a total of 4014 runs at an average of 40.54.

The left-hander is the first Australian cricketer in 132 years to be selected for the national team in any format without any first-class experience.
